Supported by a dedicated Training Consultant, the COBS Bread Franchisee Training Program is designed to provide you with all the tools to operate a COBS Bread business successfully. Developed and improved over 25 years, the training program is competency based and takes around 12-16 weeks to complete.

PURCHASE A NEW SITE

New sites include:

  • Market research done on the site prior to lease negotiations;
  • Head lease negotiated and managed by COBS Bread;
  • New equipment at negotiated cost;
  • Full turnkey design and construction of bakery managed by COBS Bread;

ON-GOING FEES

COBS Bread charges franchisees an on-going Royalty Fee of 7% of weekly sales. Franchisees also contribute a Marketing and Advertising Levy of 3% of weekly sales. Some other franchise fees and charges may apply from time-to-time, and these are all detailed in our disclosure document.

YOUR APPLICATION

Before making a commitment to purchase, every franchisee needs to feel that COBS Bread is the right business for them.

To this end, COBS Bread will:

  • Expose you to the COBS Bread environment by giving you the chance to work in a nearby bakery before you purchase;
  • Ensure you take the opportunity to talk to existing franchisees about the business and their experience;
  • Disclose sales and profit data to you for existing and comparable locations across the country.

When a location is immediately available, becoming a COBS Bread Franchisee takes approximately 16 weeks from the approval of your application.

  • Step 1: Application

    • Inquire and apply with COBS Bread
    • Personal interview and Q&A with the COBS Bread Franchise Team
    • In-bakery orientation and a first meeting with your local COBS Bread support staff
    • Meet and talk to existing COBS Bread franchisees

  • Step 2: Bakery Purchase & Training

    • Discussions and information sharing on sites of interest
    • Commence 16-week training program
    • Agree terms of your bakery purchase
    • Bakery construction and fit-out (for new bakeries)

  • Step 3: COBS Bread Franchisee

    • Complete training program and prepare for bakery opening
    • Settlement and closing of business purchase
    • Begin trading as a COBS Bread Franchisee

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Are franchisees allowed to create their own recipes?

    To achieve consistency and strength in our network, all COBS Bread bakeries must bake products from the COBS Bread approved recipe book. Franchisees are welcome to submit recipe recommendations to the support office on recipes they may have created themselves. Quite often COBS Bread as a brand has launched a recipe that was initially created by a franchisee.

  • What is the initial purchase cost for a COBS Bread bakery?

    The initial investment cost for a COBS Bread bakery is slightly different for a new and existing COBS Bread bakery.

    • For a new COBS Bread bakery, an approximate purchase cost is $650,000 - $750,000
    • For an existing COBS Bread bakery, an approximate purchase cost is $300,000 - $1,000,000.

  • Will COBS Bread assist with financing?

    It is the franchisee’s responsibility to secure financing. All franchisees will need to discuss financing with their financial adviser or financial institution. However, COBS Bread have established franchise financial packages with several major Canadian banks. We can provide relevant bank contact details once we receive your application.

  • What is the minimum $ amount that I need to put towards my COBS Bread purchase?

    The minimum $ amount depends on if you are financing the purchase yourself or you require bank financing. Bank financing depends on your chosen bank, but typically sits around 30% of the purchase price.

  • Do I need to be a baker or do I need previous baking experience?

    You do not need to be a baker or have any previous baking experience to apply to become a franchisee with COBS Bread. COBS Bread provide full comprehensive baking, sales and business management training to all new franchisees.

  • From my application, how long does it take to be approved into training as a COBS Bread franchisee?

    From submitting your application with COBS Bread, it typically takes anywhere between 4-6 weeks for your application to be completed and for you to be approved into training as a COBS Bread franchisee candidate.

  • Do I have to be in the bakery every day?

    To be truly successful as a COBS Bread franchisee, we require all franchisees to be regularly involved in the day-to-day operations of their bakery. In the first year, you will be most active, spending more working hours in the bakery. Once your bakery is at a point where it is being managed effectively, we will then help to guide you to scale back your hours and ensure you are gaining your desired work/life balance.

  • What are the typical hours of operation?

    Your hours will depend on the flow of foot traffic coming past your bakery, however a typical bakeries operating hours to the public would 07:00am - 19:00pm Mon-Sun

  • Can I bring in an investor/business partner?

    The partnerships available at COBS Bread are spousal partnerships only. If you are interested in having an investor/business partner, please discuss this with our Franchising Team for further information. 

  • Is COBS Bread a member of the Canadian Franchise Association?

  • How long is the training program?

    The COBS Bread training program runs for 12-16 weeks. The time will depend on how long each candidate requires to be comfortable and confident in their baking, sales and business management skills.

  • What is generally covered in the training program?

    Throughout the training program, our training consultants will be teaching you everything to do with managing your COBS Bread bakery. This includes how to monitor and manage operations and finance, the full baking process, production planning, stock control, marketing, managing staff and wages, performance and recruitment management, occupational health and safety and more.
