Behind the Bread - Oriana Villegas at Rutherford Marketplace

by User Not Found | Apr 02, 2013

Oriana Villegas has been a member of the COBS team for almost seven years. This month, she is helping us open our newest bakery - COBS Rutherford Marketplace in Vaughan, ON.

Oriana started as a sales associate and has worked her way up to be a great manager. She is extremely dedicated and passionate about who we are as a company and what we do.

“In each bakery Oriana has worked in, she has embedded herself into the community and our customers become like family to her” says Joanna Smith, Oriana’s Area Manager. “She doesn’t have employees, she has family members.  She doesn’t have customers, she has more family members.”

Oriana, Joanna and team get ready to open Rutherford Marketplace, it seems like a great time to get to know Oriana a little better.

When did you join the COBS Bread family and what inspired you to do so?

I joined COBS Bread family in May 2006 - almost seven years ago! I love that COBS bakes bread fresh from scratch every day, gives leftover bread at the end of the day to charity and supports environmentally conscious practices. This is what inspired me to join the team.

What did you do before joining COBS Bread?

I used to work as Audiologist in Chile. When I moved to Canada, I did volunteer work in several places like a seniors club, women’s centre and my daughter’s school. I also had my own business and sold artisan flowers imported from Patagonia.

What do you enjoy the most about working with COBS Bread?

When I met some of the staff from COBS Bread, I became captivated by the fun environment…and the irresistible smell of the freshly baked bread!

Which charities will Rutherford Marketplace donate end of day products to? Are you looking for more charities for the End of Day Giving Program?

We are looking forward to working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of York for our Community Day on April 12. From 3 to 7 pm, we’re donating 100% of proceeds to the charity.
We are looking for charities for our End of Day Giving Program. Interested charities can email me at

How are you planning on getting involved with Vaughan community?

We’ve been busy making friends with local businesses, daycares, school, churches, sports clubs, medical and dental offices, local banks and local charities! We hope to meet you and your family soon!

If you could invite three people to dinner who would they be?

Well, if I could invite anyone, I would invite Leonardo da Vinci who I think would love our Pane di Casa Roll. I would also invite Mozart who would enjoy our White Vienna. I’m pretty sure Einstein will prefer our Challah Bread. It would be a great combination of flavour and delightful conversation!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

When I am not working, I spend time with my family now that I am a busy grandmother. I love to enjoy food with a glass of wine and great music.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

When I was growing up, the first movie I saw in a theatre was My Fair Lady. My dad was a movie operator. In that movie, the phonetic professor teaches a young flower girl how to speak and present herself in high society. The movie left quite an impression; I became an Audiologist and I sold flowers! Now I am enjoying my life and work in job that is so much fun it’s like a hobby for me!

Are there any other interesting little tidbits that you’d like to share?

I hold the record at COBS Bread of having more than a dozen perfect Mystery Shopper scores – all 100%! I am passionate about providing excellent customer service!

I love Charlie Chaplin movies! My favourite is The Kid (1921).

Be sure to join Oriana and her team as they celebrate the opening of COBS Rutherford Marketplace on April 13.
