Celebrate Fresh in the New Year
It’s a new year, which typically means new healthy habits and resolutions for healthier eating. Whether you’re a seasoned pro at eating healthy or just starting to look at your options, we’ve got some easy ways to make some healthy decisions when it comes to your bread.
That’s right, you don’t have to cut out bread! In fact, our Registered Dietitian, Stephanie Dang from Vancouver Dietitians, wrote a whole blog post on why bread is not the enemy. The trick is to choose healthier loaves like our Cape Seed Loaf, Country Grain Loaf or Sunflower Flax Sourdough Loaf
Like all of our sandwich loaves, they are baked from scratch daily in-house at each bakery and made with no added dairy, sugar or preservatives. Which means yes, they’re also vegan suitable!
Packed with six grams of plant-based protein per slice and baked with whole grain whole wheat, a couple slices of this bread will fill you up. As a quick breakfast, top with your favourite nut butter for an extra-filling and tasty snack to help keep you fueled until lunch. Cape Seed is also loaded with nine grains and seeds like flax, sunflower, and poppy seeds making each bite taste nutty and flavourful. So good you could almost skip the nut butter – almost.
Sunflower Flax Sourdough
There’s something special about an artisan sourdough loaf, made with authentic levain and that takes 20-hours from start to finish – especially when someone else does it. Like our bakers do, at every bakery, every day.
Not only is our sourdough a fan favourite, but the Sunflower Flax Sourdough Loaf is loaded with sunflower seeds and flax seeds, for an extra crunch. One slice even has 10% of your DV for iron and four grams of protein so you can feel good about your choice. Toasted and topped with a poached egg, this loaf is the perfect way to start your day.
I like to think of this loaf as the gateway bread to a healthier loafstyle. It’s soft, fluffy, and while still packed with 8 grains and seeds, including oat flakes, sunflower seeds and flax seeds, the country grain blend is perfect for kids who point to things on their plate and say, “What’s that? I don’t want that it my sandwich!”
Used in your favourite French Toast Recipe, replacing a white bread for this whole grain whole wheat option is a sneaky way to get extra fibre. Add a yogurt and fruit topping, like in this Healthy French Roast recipe , and you won’t even notice it’s a healthy alternative.
Start your healthy loafstyle
All three of these loaves are a source of soluble and insoluble fibre, which helps you feel full longer as well as provides some digestive benefits, which you can read about more in our Bread Facts blog post from Registered Dietitian Stephanie Dang. They’re made from scratch daily in-house at all of our bakeries. Oh, did we mention that already? That’s because we’re really proud of it!
