Bread for This!
Rebecca Cripps and her brother Ben, have opened the doors to the very first COBS Bread in Bedford (a Halifax suburb), the first COBS Bread in Nova Scotia, and the first COBS Bread in the Maritimes! This is a big accomplish for the duo, and a very exciting time to be a bread lover in Bedford. Get to know your new local community baker, Rebecca.
What did you do before working at COBS?
Before working with COBS, I was the chef at a local daycare centre. I loved the interaction with the children and making their days better by providing quality, healthy food. I also graduated from the Culinary Arts Programs at NSCC Akerly. It was a very hard choice to walk away from this position, but I knew that COBS was right for me and I just couldn’t turn the opportunity down.
How did you start your COBS Bread Journey?
We began our journey with COBS in September 2018. When I say “we,” I mean, my business partner Benjamin, who is my younger brother, as well as our supportive parents. We were introduced to the brand virtually, and almost instantly knew we wanted to learn more about COBS Bread.
We travelled from Halifax to Toronto to see what the stores looked like in person, and to taste-test, of course! The quality, product selection, and the knowledgeable staff blew us away; everyone was so eager to teach us about the brand. It was clear that each bakery is very involved in their community, which is something my brother and I both loved. In July 2019, I made the move to Toronto to begin my six months of training.
What are you looking forward to about your new bakery?
I am looking forward to bringing something new to my community. I was counting down the days to get into my own bakery to help my staff learn and grow.
We look forward to building more relationships in our community. Like all COBS Bread bakeries, we will be donating our end of day products to local charities and we feel amazing knowing that we will be helping those who need it most.
Which Charity Are you Supporting for Community Day?
The Parker Street Food and Furniture Bank will be receiving 100% of our sales from our Community Day on February 23rd, 2020. They have been involved in our community for many years, and help Halifax out in so many ways. From their food bank, to filing backpacks for children for back-to-school, to toy drives, and even emergency funds for families in financial crisis which they provide with oil, power, and required medications. We want to do our part to help them, and help Haligonians.
Loaf Out Loud!
If you were a treat or loaf from COBS, which one would you be and why?

What’s your favourite baking pun or joke?
All you knead is love!
