Bakery Product Developer

Reports to: Senior Marketing and Product Development Manager

Location: Vancouver Support Office and Test Bakery

Position Summary:

We are looking for a passionate and creative Bakery Product Developer to work alongside marketing, supply chain, operations and other support teams to develop, research and prepare innovative products. This position will lead the charge in testing, trialing, and implementing recipes that will influence flavors across COBS bakeries nationwide.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Executing the product development strategy to deliver innovative products to market that align with COBS Bread’s revenue model and mission to Ignite a Passion for Bread and Fresh Baked Treats
  • Managing the in-bakery trial process for new products and improvement
  • Delivering the COBS Bread Continuous Improvement Product Strategy from test baking of new products and recipes to acting as a SME for the QA Team
  • Working closely with Cross Functional Teams to ensure excellence in product quality, compliance and profitability by providing correct formulations and costing
  • Building key relationships with strategic suppliers to source new ingredients and vendors
  • Staying abreast of trends and developments within the industry, channels, and techniques that will keep the brand in the forefront
  • Preparing finished products to the highest standards for marketing activities including promotional materials, photo shoots and customer events
  • Collaborating with the Training Team to deliver national baking competitions, Baking Days, Master Class videos and other production training as required
  • Maintaining the COBS Bread recipe book and electronic production sheet


What You Bring to the Table:

  • 5+ years’ experience working in bakery, food services, retail, hospitality or manufacturing industries
  • Experienced qualified Baker (trained at Bakery or Culinary College)
  • Extensive experience and passion for development of recipe, flavour, cost, and nutrition
  • Knowledge of ingredients functionality, product evaluation, health and nutrition, food manufacturing processes, microbiology, quality assurance principles, and market research principles
  • Strong project management skills in overseeing multiple projects and meeting tight deadlines with a sense of urgency
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills along with computer skills (MS Word and Excel)
  • Knowledge of Retail, Consumer Packaged Goods and/or Franchising is an asset
  • Culinary Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or a related field is an asset
  • Having a culinary blog and experience presenting via social media or TV is an asset
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule depending on the operational needs
  • You enjoy a dynamic, fast pace environment

Please note:

  • Some travel is required
  • Working a minimum of 3 days a week at our retail test bakery, the physical requirements are:
    • Use of tools, equipment, and machinery
    • Walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
