National Cheeseburger Day

September 18 is National Cheeseburger Day and although we know food holidays are not ‘real’ holidays we still think they should be celebrated for all their glory. If nothing else it creates a little bit of fun at home or an excuse to get friends and family around for some delicious eats. Here at COBS Bread we believe in celebrating whether the holiday be big or small so in honour of the humble cheeseburger day we want to share some fun facts as well as some entertaining ideas for you and your family. Let’s eat!

Did you know?…

Most people credit Lionel Sternberger with inventing the cheeseburger — he did so in his father’s sandwich shop in Pasadena, California.

Joey Chestnut holds the world record for eating 103 burgers in 8 minutes at the 2007 Krystal Square Off in Tennessee, USA.

Ted Reader, a Canadian barbecue chef, once created a cheeseburger at Yonge-Dundas Square in downtown Toronto that tipped the scales at 268 kilograms, or 590 pounds. If someone were to chow down the equivalent of the colossal creation in quarter-pound portions, they would have to devour 2,360 burgers.

celebrate cheeseburgers!

  • Gather your friends or family around and host a BBQ cook off. Rally up some judges to really heat up the competition!
  • Let the kids get creative with their toppings. Are we keeping it sweet and simple with some cheese or are we building it up with the works – tomato, onion, lettuce, & pickles? The choice is theirs. If you’ve got fussy eaters, we find including them in making their own meals helps a lot so this is our favourite little trick.
  • Get super cheesy by adding a multitude of cheese flavours on your bun. Want to mix up your regular cheddar or mozzarella? Why not try a smoked gouda, provolone, brie, or monterey jack? Or all of them! The choices are endless so go ahead and cheese the day!
  • Set up a burger buffet and use as many items in your cupboards as you can find. That sweet pepper relish sitting behind the sundried tomatoes next to the caramelized onions; they’re dying to be used. Go big or go home and utilise some under-used items in your pantry.
